Stories of Change

Mahi

Here is a story of Mahi, a six year old girl, who was abandoned by her parents and left at the mercy of her ageing Grandmother. She herself needs to work tirelessly as a domestic help at few homes to make her ends meet.

Mahi needed special attention as the trauma of being deprived of parental love at such a tender age could leave behind on her a lasting impression for the rest of her life. Kishalay Foundation has not only taken little Mahi under its wings but also the responsibility for her healthy upbringing lies on us. Besides the day to day looking after of her well-being on a regular basis, we started Apurba Ray scholarship sponsored by Sujoy Ray, an IT professional from Bangalore with INR 1000 per month in the year 2015; INR 500 towards her education and INR 500 towards livelihood for the family.

Initially we used to provide monthly grocery items to her, but it was important to create a sustainable source of income. With that in mind we provided her with a goat, which could fetch her a monthly income by selling its milk. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of goats through breeding resulting in the family moving towards a bit of economic independence.

Mahi is also doing well academically, already literate, and progressively doing well in her studies. Every kid matters and we are proud to have Mahi in our institution.

Chayan

Here is the story ofChayanwho lost his father at an early age. His family was extremely poor and Kishalay started supporting from then. During the early days, we distributed chicks to his mother to provide some livelihood support for their sustenance. Chayan started attending classes at our Godkhali Learning hub and gradually improved. Since 2016 we support him with monthly grocery items and his educational expenses, till now. He is now in class VII and doing well in his studies.

We initiated Apurba Roy Scholarship which sponsors education related expenses as well as we are supporting their families to come out of extreme poverty through rural livelihood. This Scholarship program is sponsored by Sujay Ray from Bangalore, an IT Professional to support the needy kids (including Chayan and Mahi).

Sumitra

Sumitra Majumdar lost her father at the age of 3 years and her mother was also seriously ill when we could find her. She used to stay at Kolkata earlier, but only after this sad incident she had to return to her maternal uncle’s place at Satjelia in Gosaba block. At that time in 2019, we came to know about her and after observing her we could easily recognise that she was suffering from acute nutritional deficiency. She was very weak and then Kishalay decided to provide her nutritional support every month. Thereafter she also started attending our classes at our Satjelia Learning Hub. With utmost care and attention by our volunteer Madhumita she could find a new life and things started improving.Today she is a happy and healthy girl with no nutritional deficiency.

Samrat and Alpana

The other kids Samrat Sardar and Alpana Sardar also faced similar fate when their father suddenly expired due to diarrhoea. Kishalay stood beside them when Samrat was aged 4 years and Alpana was still much younger, only two and a half years ! They were extremely poor and their family were not in a position to provide them adequate nourishment. They were in dire need of support with no proper nutrition and then Kishalay started providing nutritional support to their family every month since 2019. Both the kids also started attending our classes at our Satjelia Learning Hub. Today both the kids are healthy and happy and Kishalay was able to restore the smile back to the faces of their family.

Subsequently we could provide a holistic support to all the 3 kids not only for their nutrition but also for their education by providing books and stationary items to encourage their studies.
